REDKEN ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: LAURA CARMICHAEL

Redken Artist Laura Carmichael knows a thing or two about making a statement. Her bold looks are often the ones you see dotting your Instagram discover page (Think: mermaid hair, unicorn hair and galaxy hair) and in between crafting her signature rainbow-inspired haircolor looks she’s also managed to perfect the art of the “icy blonde.” Here, she shares the story of how she got started in the industry, and dishes on her volumizing secret weapon. 

 

When did you first know you wanted to be a colorist? 
My friend brought me to a hair show with her and just seeing the transformations on stage were so inspiring. I knew I wanted to create art that way too.

How did you get your start in the industry? 
Honestly, I needed a decent income to pursue my degree in biology. I knew I wanted to go all the way with my science education and wanted a good schedule and flexible job along the way. Needless to say, I never finished my degree because my love for hair color and the science behind it evolved tremendously!

Where do you find inspiration for the looks you  create? 
Everywhere! Fashion, nature, modern art — Any place where structure and color come together to create.
 

 

What has been the biggest obstacle you've faced in your career? 
Patience. I always want things so fast, even if I am not 100% ready for them. I truly believe the universe gives you what you are ready for. As time goes on, I gain more. Redken has taught me to slow down and celebrate every win along the way which is so important!
 
What has been the most exciting moment of your career? 
Becoming a Redken Artist, and being given so many wonderful and amazing opportunities, such as  working backstage at Symposium with the wardrobe team, working with NYX Cosmetics and Redken to do a social influencer’s hair in LA, and most recently working with Redken and NYX again in NYC for a Halloween shoot!
 
What is your go to Redken product and why? 
GUTS 10 for amazing root volume, and Powder Grip for added texture.
 

What one piece of advice would you give to young stylists just starting out in the industry? 
Stay persistent, believe in your dreams, set short term and long term goals, find a good mentor, and most of all, believe in yourself! 
 
What has been your favorite hair color trend this year? 
Root extension and baby lights! I love how organic yet refined the look is, but with less maintenance than traditional foils. I have also had the pleasure to thoroughly enjoy the ‘unicorn hair’ trend!
