Great addition in my toolbox!

As a Chromatics lover this was a tough adjustment. I didn’t like the results at first and was seeking other options outside of Redken which was heartbreaking as a 35 yr user. Then I was offered a class to be educated on Gel Oils and my world opened up. It is truly a fantastic tool with excellent grey coverage! Mixing correctly is key. It could be more “gel” like when mixed for a less messy brush application, but overall it’s a great product.

Awful colour!

Awful colour, either doesn’t cover or comes out to dark, like sometimes two shades darker. Has ruined my clients hair leaving me having to try and fix the hair. Have been a long time user of redken but unfortunately I will be finding a new brand that actually delivers the results I want and doesn’t cost me my reputation and multiple colour corrections. It’s such a shame because I love shades eq. I also was never told about chromatics being discontinued and I feel redken do not inform you of any changes or keep you in the loop with anything. They have become a big corporation that don’t care about their customers, if they did they should of asked us if we were happy with chromatics which my reply would of been 100% do not change your colour!

It has a no ammonia feature!

I have been using color gels oils now since Chromatics was discontinued, and I’m finally throwing in the towel on this product line, while I’m tired of hearing about how great it is; I have wasted money, time, and have disappointed many clients in the process! This color is too opaque, running and dripping quite often, and when it actually does work like a gel, it’s still messy. It’s also trial and error trying to keep it from looking like shoe polish and hoping it has enough translucency to actually take the place of Chromatics, or even having similar shades that Chromatics had. Why??? You had a great product and now this! I can’t believe how many positive reviews it has had. I will be looking for another product, and I should’ve done it sooner!

No, I do not recommend this product.

  • This is 2 of the colors, that are true to color, but dripped endlessly down my clients face

I have been trying desperately to find a new hair color since you discontinued Chromatics, why did you do such a thing? It was wonderful, consistent ant beyond cover was perfect for covering greys . I tried color gel oils and it’s shiny but only if I wasn’t my hair at least 2 shades darker, it’s horrible! Why don’t you ask your customers what they want? I am still searching and it’s been almost a year, and by the looks of it you aren’t going to bring it back. 8GI was the perfect base for throwing a few hi lights in to make my hair look totally natural. I am so disappointed in you Redken!

I give up!

I say this to you as a long time, loyal Redken client. You destroyed your brand with the change from Chromatics. I left a salon and hairdresser I love and went to for many years because my hair color had become a science experiment since this change. It either looked like shoe polish 2 shades darker or turned to faded brass in a week no matter what they tried. You have competitors that are doing better than whatever this is you are offering now. As a company, you should really think about that.

Horrible

lousy dye. I live between Spain and the United States. In Spain they have been putting it on me and my gray hair refuses to take on color and it has caused burns on my scalp with a lot of flaking. They started putting it on in the living room after Christmas because it was new but now it's impossible. My hair has fallen out a lot after this. I have been using Redken for many years but it has totally disappointed me. I have written to Redken Spain and they have not even responded to me. Now I'm quite suspicious of this brand because of the poor quality.

Awful! Bought 8NCh hoping for a level 8 and it's closer to a level 5 or 6 and this was on roots with 90% grey with a 30vol... was trying to get to a lighter color to eventually transition to grey and this set that back months if not a year...

I have tried this product, I do not care for it. I used chromatics for a decade. You have nothing that can be compared to chromatic to date, not even close. I don't understand why a company would discontinue a product that salons and people everywhere like and are satisfied with for years. Why doesn't Redken sell the formula to another company?

Been trying to find something that works as well as chromatics. And this is NOT it. I’m losing credibility in finding an ammonia free color that actually covers grey. I’ve been using redken for 10+ years. Why get rid of chromatics and replace it with this drippy messy unreliable color?

The saying is if it’s not broke, don’t fix it! I had to switch to a different product unfortunately. If you’d bring chromatics back I’ll switch back in a heartbeat. One of the best products I had for my clients.

Horrible Product

Had been using Chromatics for many, many years and loved it. Now it's discontinued and this is the replacement product which is horrible. The color is not like Chromatics, it lightens up so much, I get my roots done every 4 weeks, that every 2-3 months I need to have all my hair done because it is so light. Hate it, so sad they changed a great product. Will be finding a salon that uses something else, this is too expensive for the horrible results.

Almost a slam dunk!

I have been working with Redken since 2006, and I understand the reasons behind the mixed reactions to the Color Gels Oils line. It's important to note that the product itself is not inherently flawed; rather, its effectiveness depends on how well it fits the specific needs of each situation. For example, I have level 4 virgin hair with 50% grey. To address this, I applied 5NN with 30 vol to my new growth and used Shades EQ 5NA on zones 2 and 3. The result is a seamless match. However, one point of concern is that consumers may expect the color levels on the label to align precisely with the actual results. Without my extensive experience across various Redken color lines, I wouldn’t have known that Color Gels Oils can lack the undertone and dimension that some may expect. Despite this, I continue to use it for quick touch-ups, as it effectively covers my grey.

Yes, I recommend this product.

NICE BUT DOESN'T WASH OUT

I find the Color Gels Oils has great shine and gray coverage. Somehow the roots don't look as obvious when it's growing out. (I do roots every three weeks) I also noticed that my scalp is less itchy. What I don't like is that it's almost impossible to wash it out. I noticed a lot of color on the towel when I was drying. For that reason I give it three stars.

Color payoff is too dark

I loved Redken Chromatics, it was such a beautiful color line. I have had the hardest time with Color Gel Oils. Last night I used 7NCH and 6NCH equal parts and my client's hair looks like a dark level 4. So disappointing. I added a level 7 hoping to counteract the color going too dark and still. It's impossible. Please consider reformulating. So many of my co-stylist are switching to other brands. I have always loved Redken but so many misses as of late.

Not so great

Not sure how this product was supposed to be better than chromatics. I gave the gel oils a chance. I’ve used chromatics for the last 5 years. I’m so disappointed with color gel oils. The shade range is disappointing. TThe gel oils are harder to remove from the hairline compared to chromatics. They are not true to tone. The “gel” (liquid)consistency is extremely messy. Sure, they give coverage, but so does every other line. The cream consistency of chromatics is much more pleasant to work with. The smell is not overpowering, compared to the gel oils. I’m just so disappointed. After years of consistency with my clients, I’m now facing inconsistency and disappointment both on my part and theirs. I never thought I’d use anything but redken.

Excellent!

Color gels are the only line I have found that will cover gray on brunettes who don’t want a level 5 or lower. I used the 7NN for 45 minutes on 75% gray. The coverage was 100%, shiny and no damage. The gel has a lot of pigment so I recommend leveling up a shade. The only issue is lifting this gel with foils behind color application. The gel color holds and took much longer to lift. If your client only wants permanent color with excellent gray coverage, this is an excellent choice.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I am a cosmetologist and like to try products out before using on anyone else. I have recently started graying so a i felt that this was the perfect opportunity to try the Redken color gel oils. I checked my color after 30 minutes and my grays were still prominent. Another 10 minutes and I washed ..hoping that it would have grabbed and nope! Sadly, my grays are not covered and I will not be using this product for myself on anyone else

Terrible color. the chromatics were full proof ,no surprise results. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? Why don’t you ask the stylists what we want instead of a corporate decision? I’m leaving your company and I have used redken for 30 of my 42 years. You don’t even make a 5nw among other shades, Good grief DO BETTER. I see a mass amount of stylists leaving redken and going to another line. Complete betrayal to the ones promoting YOU. GOOD BYE

My stylist tried this on my hair today an add tee using chromatically for years. It sat for 40 mins and my grays are not fully covered. Instead of a rich color deposit it’s hollow looking and almost resembles fake wig hair with a lot of white and silver poking through. So sad the chromatics is leaving and this trash is replacing it.

For my own coverage I prefer these color gels to the 10 minute which do nothing to cover my grey even the double NN series. I now use Color Gel oils ….5NN and 6NN plus a drop of 6NA (I pull red orange) I also use grey drops and my coverage is excellent plus it lasts about 3 weeks. I’m about 75% grey. I like it.

Yes, I recommend this product.
