Master the Baby Blonde Technique

Mastering the lived in, low-maintenance blonde is essential for every stylist. Redken Global Artistic Ambassador Maggie Perry is sharing our new signature Baby Blonde Technique: a natural-looking, bright face frame with soft, seamless dimension. This look is perfect for clients wanting to revive the natural, sun-kissed blonde of their youth without the high-maintenance upkeep of traditional highlights. Maggie walks you through sectioning, placement, teasing vs. over-direction, and her precise formula to achieve this Baby Blonde look, powered by Blonde IQ 9+, Shades EQ, Shades ALK.
What is the Baby Blonde Technique?
The Baby Blonde Technique delivers a natural-looking, youthfully bright face frame with soft, seamless dimension by focusing on strategic illumination. By heavily brightening the hair immediately surrounding the face while maintaining depth and natural dimension through the interior, you achieve a dramatic but seamless face frame.
Because the interior features soft, melted ribbons of light rather than harsh foil lines, the growth-out is incredibly soft, allowing clients to stretch their salon visits.
- Face Frame Touch-Up: Every 10 to 12 weeks.
- Full Interior Highlight Touch-Up: Every 5 to 6 months.

Step by Step Application
Step 1: Sectioning & Density
Analyze your client's hair density. To customize the level of brightness and dimension:
- Use wider sections to retain more natural negative space and depth (more dimension).
- Use finer sections for maximum saturation and brightness. Make sure the hair texture is appropriate for teasing before starting.
Step 2: Teasing & Over-Direction
Take your section and tease back toward the scalp. The blend for this look relies heavily on teasing and over-direction to create a seamless, soft-focus transition.
- Pro Tip: If a client's hair is too fine or sensitized to tease, use a blow-dryer on a cool setting to push down the shorter baby hairs/pieces before applying lightener to create the same air-blended effect.
Step 3: Blonde IQ Highlight Placement
Apply the Blonde IQ 9+ highlight onto the teased sections wrapped in foils. Focus the saturation on the mid-lengths and ends, feathering your application up toward the teased transition line. Keep moving up the head, over-directing the hair above the crown, until the hair can no longer be physically over-directed above the head.
Step 4: Process & Rinse
Process at room temperature until your desired level of lightened blonde is achieved. Rinse thoroughly and cleanse with Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate shampoo to balance the hair's pH and reinforce weakened bonds post-bleaching.
Step 5: Zone 1 Root Melt
Towel-dry the hair. Apply the Zone 1 Shades EQ (07NA Pewter) formula to the root area. Using a blending brush, gently melt the root formula down slightly to meet the lightened areas, establishing a soft gradient.
Step 6: Zone 2 & 3 Gloss
Apply the Zone 2 & 3 Shades EQ (010VG + 09GRo) formula through the mid-lengths and ends. Massage the gloss through to ensure complete, even saturation.
- Processing Time: Process globally for 20 minutes at room temperature. Rinse, condition, and prep for styling.
