Prep Ahead of Time
A few days before the appointment, give your client a call to discuss their upcoming service. This is a great way to both build the relationship with the client and begin the consultation process.
“Calling the client prior to the appointment sets a nice tone, while allowing you to pre-consult, and match client requests with reality.” Says Stanko, “It also provides you with an opportunity to adjust your booking time, suggest other salon services such as a haircut or treatment, and request that the client send a selfie or bring inspiration images depicting the haircolor she wants.”
Listen. Listen. Listen
Stanko’s next tip for a great consultation is to of course listen to your client. Help your client to feel comfortable by thanking them for coming to see you and asking questions during the consultation. Get to know her style, as well as her likes and dislikes, and listen closely to her responses.
“Listen before speaking.” says Stanko, “It’s important to get a feel for the client’s anxiety level, mindset and openness to hear suggestions. Ask her what she likes about the color inspirations she’s brought for you to review, and ask her to describe her personal style. Listen closely and repeat back her own words as a means to understanding her.”
Understand with Visuals
When it comes to truly understanding your client’s desired end look, visuals can be one of the most useful consultation tools. Stanko recommends utilizing your social media account as a means to display different visuals and open the dialogue with your client during the consultation.
“Build your social media profiles with images of your work, as well as your favorite colors and styles.” says Stanko, “Ask your client ‘Blonde like this?’ ‘As dark as this brunette?’” Talking with your client about different types of looks and tones can help you visualize the result that’s closest to the one she’s imagining.
